Embarassing Moment #4 - The "Lost My Bathing Suit" Story

Age eleven to thirteen was basically just one long embarrassing moment. Look at my glasses! And my bangs! Oh well, I may have looked scary, but I at least I always had a good time. These years are sadly very well documented with many pictures just like this as well as many hours of home video. My siblings like to watch these videos for a good laugh every once in a while and I have promised them all if they ever put one on when Bobby is present I will make them pay. Why anyone let me get my hands on a video camera during these awkward, awkward years is beyond me! Anyway, I'm using this picture to segway into my cluster of embarrassing moments from my childhood.

My mom used to take us to the beach A LOT during the summer. I have always enjoyed swimming at the beach and used to spend all my time there in the water or playing on the shore in the sand. Often after a few hours of playing my suit would catch a lot of sand, so I would go deep into the water where noone could see me, pull my swimsuit down around my knees, and shake the suit to loosen the sand. On such an occasion when I was about the same age as I was in the above picture, I had my suit around my knees and a big wave came and whisked it away! Panic-stricken, I reached down under the water frantically grasping for my suit, but it was GONE. To make matters worse, we were nowhere near where my mother was sitting with all our stuff. The tide was bad that day and we had drifted at least 50 yards from where she was. I asked my sister Julia to go find mom and grab me a towel so I could get out the water. So here I am, drifting farther and farther away from my mom, totally naked, in the ocean. Every once in a while I'd pass someone else who was swimming, trying to hide the fact that I was totally nude. It felt like an hour before Julia came back with that towel, but I was so grateful to see her when she finally did. We walked back to where my mom was and after we laughed about what had happened, she actually asked me to walk down the beach and look for my swimsuit, in case it washed up on the shore! But not before I could put on the shirt and shorts I brought as beach cover-up. I guess I can understand- it was a sweet blue Bodyglove swimsuit- remember the kind that used to zip up the front?

I totally remember this story. This was the reason why we would go to the bathrooms to clean out our bathing suits in the sink. I love reading your stories. I needed a little comic relief at work. I almost burst out laughing!

So that was YOU I saw..... Kidding! ;) HILARIOUS!!! I HATED getting sand in the suit..especially in that little pocket in the crotch sewn the WRONG direction (allowing all sand to flow into the suit). I remember dumping an entire little mountain of sand out of my suit, but I was in the NASTY beach bathrooms. My mom would TOTALLY have made me go looking too! That is funny! (Do you remember what beach/month/year? I know that is TOTALLY random, but I have a huge wave story from when I looked as cool as you! ;)

So great! And yes, I do remember the zip up the front suits. I never owned one, but did envy those who did. My suit was the kind that was a one piece but had the wholes in the side. Remember those?

And in reference to your "sneaking in the dance" post...you were still a great RS pres. You were just able to relate to all the rest of us hooligans better!!

NO way is that picture of you, our gorgeous Katherine!! Are you going to challenge all of us to share our embarrassing moments at the end of this because I can share some pictures that I,.... well really don't want to, in fact it would take a triple dog dare. :) There is a whole section of life that never got scrap booked, it just got shoved in an envelope to hopefully be forgotten. FOREVER. This is a great story!

Ok so when I saw that picture of you I thought "How did she get a picture of me!" I am telling that I have that exact same picture of myself with the same glasses and hair!!! I am so not kidding. Scary!!! I will have to find it next time I go home and show it to you!! LOVE the story too. Thanks for the laugh today- I really needed it!

I had an ugly period too, from about 4th grade to the 7th. I got glasses and a perm. NOT GOOD! Anyway, that was a great story!

You are a doll. I love reading your funny stories. Was your body glove suite neon green? I think I found it because I somehow inherited one when I was young.

Katherine, I seriously think I'm falling in love with you. I love that picture--- it makes me feel so much better about what a dork I was! The only sad thing is that you were a fun dork and I was a depressed sad dork. At least I'm a fun dork now. Anyway, I just had to add my two bits about how much I love getting to know you in your blog. Sometime we need to hang out and be real life friends, too.

I love that story. I remember when I got back to mom to grab a towel for you she asked me what I was doing and I told her all dramatically that I had no time to talk. I remember we had moved something like 5 life gaurd stations down. I just remeber running a long distance to grab that towel.

Oh my goodness, I am SURE Ashley has informed you of our ultra-awkward early teens (of course, "awkward" for Ash was skinny ... I would take that any day over haircut-that-was-totally-unflattering-against-my-chubby-face). We went to Europe that summer (good thing, too - we probably wouldn't have had social lives in Utah), and of course all the photographic evidence of that unbelievable continent includes our painfully awkward selves. To this day, we have a difficult time looking at them. Thanks for the story, I had a great laugh!

Okay, Katherine -- I think that picture was taken somewhere around the time I first met you, and you were always cute and adorable at that age from what I remember!
