Magazines from the Doctor's Office

I'm coming clean. I steal magazines from the doctor's office occasionally. Truthfully I fight this urge every time I'm in a doctor's office, but sometimes I'm just not strong enough to walk out without that Better Homes & Gardens containing recipes that must become mine, or the fashion mag with makeup tips I've been desperately needing to spice up my look, or that article in TIME that I didn't have time to read because the nurse called my name too soon. (Who are you kidding, Katherine? You don't read Time. Okay, People. People Magazine is my doctor's office guilty pleasure.)

Yesterday I noticed that four people had taken my quiz and marked "yes" it is wrong to take magazines from the doctor's office. Uh-oh. So I hurried and answered "no." On my own quiz! Well, tonight I noticed four more people marked "yes" but two people marked "no." I'm so glad that I'm not the only one! So, let me see if I've got this straight: 72% of the time it is wrong to take magazines from the doctor's office, but the other 28% of the time, it's all good. That works for me because it's about 28% of the time that I allow myself to succumb to temptation and walk out with the doctor's magazine.

The main reason I want to take magazines is the same reason I think the doctor's office doesn't mind my taking them. They are old! Sometimes several months, which means I can't find a copy on the magazine rack and it's time for the office manager to get rid of them. I figure I am 1.) saving the office manager/receptionist a trip to the trash can, and 2.) recycling. The environment? Come on, guys.

So I worked for a Dr. for years and I must admit it's where my pet peeve stems from. Although it was worse when people would come up to the desk and ask us to make some copies out of what they were reading... its then I wished they'd have just hid it in their purse. It was only when the new ones were taken that it really bothered me. I am just selfish and wanted to enjoy them myself during lunch.
So in conclusion... Taking new, no. Taking older, no problem, they just get thrown away. O' and don't make Dr's office staff make copies of articles.
Thats just my opinion.

Hmmm, yeah. I can see your reasoning.

Okay, I have never taken an entire magazine, but I have carefully torn out pages with recipes or fun ideas. Besides when it's fall and you are reading the valentines issue of Family Fun does it really matter?

What I like to do is bring in my own old magazines and exchange them for theirs. My 1982 National Geographic for your May ESPN the magazine? Yes, yes I'll take that trade.

I will admit it, I voted it was wrong. I don't know though now that I know you do, I have a good excuse the next time I feel the need to swipe one :)

"no I shouldn't... but then again Katherine does..."

Just a little suggestion from your Grandma...Ask the receptionist if she will copy the recipe you want on her copy machine (I have done this and she was happy to do it)or, carry a little notebook in your purse and quickly copy it down while you wait. I am sure we spend more time waiting in the Docter's office than any other place in this world, so you should have time! I still love you though. :-)

The official opinion of a receptionist, if they are old it is probably fine. Just ask. I have torn out pages before, and I have seen other people do it too! They look aroud to see if anyone noticed the load tearing noises. Pretty funny.

I love the way you justify it. And I agree, for the record--- you're totally helping recycle!

You thief! You do know that you can go to your local library and rent out as many magazines, new and old, as your heart desires...

Try that next time.

Yes, I am the one that tears the pages out and then looks around to see who all heard it. I'd rather just have the page instead of the whole magazine anyway. So, if I am not tearing pages out at the doctor's office, I am cleaning out my purse that is full of the torn out pages!
